A dancer? At our school? Well, yes, junior Avion Johnson, is a great dancer. “Basically, I started to dance when I was 13, my aunt used to take my brother and I to the recreational center and they had everything, so I was doing chess, tutoring, swimming, playing basketball, and dance,” Johnson said. Johnson did modern dance, but a couple of months later he stopped doing it because his best friend was a background dancer for people with big names, so she invited him to join her group and the next day he did. “My motivation for dance is what it creates, dance is a huge way of self-expression and that just connects me with my body. Dance is a therapy for me, a reward, and a challenge,” Johnson said. “The best part about dancing is becoming a different person, when you’re on stage you’re not the same person you are, it’s like you’re in a vessel that is creating a story through dance and just uplifting the energy in the room. For example, I want to make an impression on other people and young kids, if I can do it everyone else can too if you put effort into it,” Johnson said. He went on to say that some people use music and dancing to have fun and be funny, others do it as a stress reliever and to create a story from their dance. Johnson uses dance as a stress reliever and to help him think.
