On May 2, the annual Senior Art Seminar mural was unveiled. The night began with the graduating artists Journey Dewitt and Kierstan Laughery alongside art teacher Fiona Rawson welcoming family, friends, school staff, and school board members to the classroom where this project began!
This year’s seminar was a bit different though, these girls not only did their very own mural, but they also finished a past mural that was left unfinished in 2020 due to the Covid Pandemic called “Geisha” By Tristan Eaton. Dewitt and Laughery were able to show their work on it and present the painting that sat still for almost four years!
Once that was shown, they moved onto unveil their mural called “Pink Sweet Peas” by Georgia O’Keeffe. The seniors agreed that there was a truly special reason that they chose this painting: “We wanted to use a female artist because a lot of the artists are men,” Dewitt said. “The meaning was special, gratitude, friendship and goodbye,” Laughery added. They unleashed their hard work and by the sound of it, everyone loved it! “The mural was draining but fun,” Dewitt stated, “We were just excited to finish it,” Laughery continued.
After the artists were finished showing off, they moved back to the classroom; friends, family, and others followed back to the room to enjoy a PowerPoint the girls prepared about the painting and presented it to their audience!
To end the night everyone enjoyed some cake and soda and praised Dewitt and Laughery for their marvelous work! The senior artists agreed that this project was “a big accomplishment” for them both. Rawson agreed as well. “The mural came out really, really, good! I think these students are one of the best Senior Art Seminar groups I’ve had… so I am proud!” Rawson said.
