Varsity baseball ends the season with a tough game against Lakeview

The Varsity baseball team played the Lakeview Huskies at Fraser High School for districts on Friday, May 31st. Even though they made it to all seven innings, it ended with a score of 14-0. The boys played a strong game only giving up two runs through the first four innings. For the seniors it was their last game playing with the panthers. “It was really sad that it was my last game, but it was a fun season,” third baseman, Ian Major said. On Mar. 19, 2019, RHS kicked off their spring sports season with an informational meeting for student athletes and their parents. Coaches of each sport (J.V. and varsity) had attended, introducing the players of each sport to the attendees. On Monday, May 14, choir director Christina Collins presented a spring choir cabaret. It was held at 7 pm. The symphonic choir, who receiveda one at MSVMA choral festival, started off the night by singing “Amazing Grace” by Newton. Junior Niyah Caslin sung the song “Listen” from Dreamgirls, written and composed by Krieger, Cutler, and Preven. Seniors Samantha Averitt and Jasmine Zarves sung "Found/Tonight" from Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton, written by Miranda and Platt.      On May 9, Students raided their closets and stores to find the perfect gear for today. Some dressed in relatives military uniforms, others dressed in there hunting gear. Senior Jacob Mohn began his wrestling career at the age of 4 and now, 14 years later, Mohn is ready for the next step in his journey and that is at Rochester college. “We are gonna compete at the national level, not just the local level, and that is gonna take a lot of hard work,” coach Paul Holdren said. The 2017 baseball season has officially concluded. They ended the season with an outstanding record of 18 wins and 3 losses. On May 30 and June 2, the varsity baseball team competed in the Macomb county district championship. The team won two out of three games in the tournament. The squad defeated the Lakeshore Shorains five to three and blew out the East Detroit Shamrocks 23-0. Varsity coach Brad VandeVorde and junior varsity coach Chris Mahla hosted a meeting on Feb. 10 for all girls looking to try out for the spring season. At the meeting, the coaches discussed conditioning and tryout dates and what they expect from each student. “What I expect this year is what I expect year out of my players: being committed and working together to achieve the ultimate goal,” VandeVorde said. He also added that he wants them to give 100 percent not only on the field, but in the classroom. After school workouts will take place Feb.23 and 25 upstairs outside the library from 3-4pm. BASEBALL After finishing 12-5 last year, varsity coach Keith Marzec and the team have been killing it. They have seven wins, one loss, and are 5-0 in the MAC Silver division. Their pitching has been tremendous with senior Austin Morrow, who has been lights out with a 2-0 record, 28 strikeouts, and a .857 earned run average along with junior Evan Gates with a 2-1 record, 22 strikeouts, and a .792 ERA.
