The spring musical this year has been announced, the production that Miranda Moe, Aubrey Meade and Adrienne Miller have decided to put on is “Hairspray”. A musical based in the 60’s, surrounding a funky-fresh girl named Tracy Turnblad, who loves the Corny Collins show. She’s fun loving, maybe not quite freewheeling, but very ambitious and hopeful for her future.
The musical follows Tracy’s life. She goes to school, doesn’t pay attention to class, and gets detention all too often. There, she meets Seaweed J. Stubbs! A charismatic danceaholic with an angelic voice. Sadly, it’s the 60s, and although Seaweed isn’t too keen on being seen with Tracy, all she wants is for everyone to dance together and to include everyone. Regardless of the color of their skin, size of their hair, type of their body, or anything that may set them apart instead of fitting in.
It is a very difficult topic to portray, but the theatre department is doing the musical as much justice as they know how! The cast list came out, and they jumped right into it. It requires a big cast, and they seem to have some extremely dedicated kids.
Sophomore Daniel Penrod who plays Corny Collin’s, the television show host for his program “the corny Collin’s show” is thrilled to be working with his castmates. “The people in this production are like no other. You’ll never find a group like this anywhere else in the world” Penrod said.
The theatre department hopes you will come and see the musical this spring! They are working hard to help Tracy’s story come to life. Although some of the themes may be difficult to portray, it is truly going to be an all-around amazing production with so many people, and outrageously large dance numbers that they hope you will all appreciate.
