The Detroit Tigers welcome Casey Mize from the MLB Draft

On June 4, 2018, the Major League Baseball draft had taken place, giving the Detroit Tigers the upper hand. While having the worst record in the last season, the Tigers had gotten the first overall pick in the draft. With many well-known players that could have been chosen, Detroit chose Casey Mize, a right handed pitcher from Auburn University. Mize is 21 years old and had been attending Auburn for two years. With eyes on many players across the country, Mize was considered a favorite for some of the top overall picks in the past few weeks. The Detroit Tigers had been rebuilding their team, introducing new players to the field, as well as the new coach, Ron Gardenhire. The Tiger’s record for the current season is 29 wins to 32 losses.

Other players where scouted to different teams, making the top five round picks. The San Francisco Giants had the second round pick, which was center fielder Joey Bart. The third pick was given to the Philadelphia Phillies who chose the third baseman, Alec Bohm. The Chicago White Sox chose second basemen, Nick Madrigal, for the fourth pick. The fifth pick was the Cincinnati Reds who chose third baseman, Jonathan India. The Detroit Tigers had also chose outfielder, Parker Meadows, from Georgia Prep Sports Academy for the second round pick. Meadows is also the younger brother of outfielder, Austin Meadows, of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
