Day of The Dead used to be like a thanksgiving in Mexico, it was celebrated to give thanks for the annual harvest. It then became a day to remember and give thanks to loved ones who passed away. “The Day of the Dead is a joyful celebration when you can connect with and remember your ancestors.”- Anthony Gonzalez. Day of the dead is celebrated in a lot of diverse ways. Some celebrate it for the whole week of Oct. 27– Nov. 2, then some people celebrate for 3 days Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. People also make altars also known as Ofrendas with pictures of their family pets and friends. They leave out food for them and flowers, specifically marigolds. “At home in Mexico I celebrate by decorating my ofrenda with my family then we all eat together, go to church and then go to the cemetery sometime people will even spend the night at the cemetery.” Ms. Castellanos who is one of Roseville High School’s Spanish teachers said. “At my home we make a mini ofrenda and we celebrate for 2 days Nov. 1– Nov. 2” said Mrs. Borg who is another Spanish teacher.
