As we say hello to the new 2024-2025 school year we welcome, and say hello to, our new staff. Starting with Sissi Borg, our new Spanish teacher. In high school she was on the cheer team, did National honors society, and student council. Borg later went on to study at the University of Michigan- Dearborn. Before working at RHS, she taught in Downriver, Mi and worked at a language center teaching Spanish as well as English to incoming Asian immigrants. A hobby of hers is going to the gym.” I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was 5 when I would play school with my brothers. As I got older and I saw the impact that my teachers had on me and my friends, I wanted to do the same. I wanted to help students reach their full potential in whatever regard is best for them,” Borg said. She has been teaching for 3 years now. Borg says that her favorite thing about teaching is working with students and watching them meet their goals and seeing their faces light up when they finally feel like they understood something. She loves watching their passions come to life.
The next new teacher is Kimberly Rakestraw, a new math teacher., Rakestraw went to the University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College. In high school she was on the pom pom squad and was in the Nation Honor Society. Before working at RHS, “I taught at an all-boys catholic school in Detroit,” Rakestraw said. In her free time, she enjoys going shopping, going to the movies, and going out to eat with friends/family. The reason she became a teacher is because she has a love for education and math. This is her 17th year teaching. Her favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with her students.
The last new teacher to join RHS is Rebekah Weiss, our new Art teacher. In high school Weiss was in many theatre productions, and even made it to assistant director! Later, Weiss got her bachelor’s and master’s at Grand Vally State University. Before working at RHS, she taught at a k-8th elementary school. A few hobbies of hers include gardening, making ceramic art, and hiking nature trails. Weiss states her reasoning for becoming a teacher is, because her art teacher in high school encouraged her to become an art teacher. This will be her 9th year of teaching. “I love seeing student growth and help cultivate their artistic talent,” Weiss said.
