On Thursday, May 14, National Honor Society hosted the annual Awards Night ceremony. At the event, students were recognized and awarded for their academic and sports achievements. Principal Jason Bettin spoke at the beginning of the ceremony and acknowledged multiple students, including this year’s Salutatorian and Valedictorian, Gabriel Olsen and Riham Sarar, as well as Derek Hillaker for his achievements in basketball, and the Athlete of the Year Jay’Den Williams.
After regards from the principal, counselor Courtney Roberts announced the winner of the Michigan Wolverine Scholarship, Matthew Bowman. The scholarship awards $10,000 to any student pursuing education for a career in the skilled trades. On stage, Bowman received a bronze statue as a symbol of his win.
Once speeches from Roberts and Bettin concluded, NHS members announced the names of and handed awards to students who received them in various academic areas, such as writing, English, journalism, art, math, and technical skills.
Senior Shaylinn Buhl received an award for her efforts in Journalism II. “It was nice to have an award for something I’ve been doing for 4 years, and I’m happy to see all my hard work pay off,” Buhl said.
Awards Night ended with cake, which was served to all students and guests.
