On March 7th, MHSAA hosted its annual state championships for wrestling. Four RHS student athletes qualified: Daniel Kesterson, Darnel Boyd, Brandon Halsey, and Jay’Den Williams. Williams ended the eventful night on the podium with a first-place medal, with family, friends, coaches and teammates cheering him on. The years of dedication continuing to pay off, he dominated his final match, winning 20-3. Williams ended his high school wrestling career as a two-time MHSAA state champion.
Jay’Den Williams has been wrestling for 10 years, with his dad being both one of his coaches and his number one supporter. He pushed him into becoming the champion he is now. “I hope that from this experience, Jay’Den takes away that hard work and sacrifices will pay off,” Williams’ father said.
In joining Roseville’s wrestling team, he has been a finalist at MHSAA four times and has now been a champion twice. “My favorite part about wrestling for Roseville wasn’t even the wrestling part; it was the times before and after the tournament. When I didn’t feel like practicing, I left feeling better every time. Cutting weight with the team, pushing my partners, and my parents pushing me. Those moments will certainly be a great memory,” Williams said.
Jay’Den Williams is going to continue his wrestling career at the University of Michigan. He made his decision clear moments after winning the championship match, pulling on his Michigan gear over his singlet, symbolizing the next step in his journey. “What excites me most about wrestling at UofM is really just stepping on that mat with Michigan across my chest,” Williams said.
