According to a Roseville Community Schools press release, RHS will be pairing up with Michigan State University and will be providing a mentoring program for incoming freshman next school year. Current juniors and sophomores can serve as mentors and have a positive influence on freshmen who will be coming here next year. The role of these mentors will be to help students who had a rough time in middle school behaviorally or academically.
“I would like for older students to have an opportunity to develop leadership skills, and help younger students feel more connected to the school and compelled to make better decisions,” assistant principal Monica Gabriel said.
Juniors and sophomores who are chosen to be mentor will be trained by representatives from MSU. Mentees and their mentors will meet up on a monthly basis in sessions that will be ran by MSU. Both mentors and mentees who will be a part of this program will make them eligible for scholarships and other opportunities at the university.
A mentor program could have helped numerous of students in the past, so it will be beneficial in the future.
“I could’ve met more people, made more friends, and joined more clubs,” sophomore Bethany Adkins said.
